Based in Akron, Ohio, EarthQuaker Devices (EQD), a handmade effects pedal manufacturer, boasts a team led by founder Jamie Stillman, along with several staff members who are actively engaged in the world of music and art. The organization operates like a cohesive artistic collective, resembling more of a "band" than a conventional business. Jamie, having been a musician himself, embarked on the journey of entrepreneurship after his own effects pedals malfunctioned. Upon dismantling and attempting repairs on his own, he became captivated by the simplicity of the circuit boards. Eventually, this fascination led him to dive into the production of all-handmade effects pedals in the basement of his Akron home, marking the birthplace of EQD.
Today, EQD employs approximately 50 individuals and has evolved into a globally recognized effects pedal manufacturer. Despite its growth, the remarkable aspect is that a significant portion of the production is still meticulously done by hand. Handmade products often feature playful doodles, adding a unique touch to each creation. Going beyond the typical scope of an effects pedal manufacturer, EQD organizes local music festivals and takes young musicians on international tours. It's a unique blend of being an effects pedal maker and a cultural force.
Cultars approached EQD for an interview because they had never encountered a company quite like it. To delve into the essence of their philosophy, a virtual meeting was arranged connecting the cities of Tokyo, Akron, and San Francisco via Zoom.
